February 6-10

Hi Room 4 Families,

We had an amazing, full week of learning in Room 4.

Every morning we begin with a read aloud that typically relates to social-emotional learning. This week we read Benji and the Bad Day and The Feels. We discussed how it is okay to feel all the feelings. We brainstormed ways to express our feelings in appropriate ways and will post our ideas in the classroom to remind us of ways we can regulate. Here are some of our ideas:
        - hug a friend and cry
        - talk to a safe person
        - talk to yourself
        - take a deep breath
        - count backwards

This week we also split into small literacy groups. We worked on various skills and various levels. Some of us worked on printing and letter formation as well as the letter sounds P, B, T and D. Others worked on segmenting and blending consonant-vowel-consonant words (CVC) with the short "a" sound, and words that include the digraphs "sh", "th", "ch" and "th". We learned a game called Switch It. This game allows us to work on our letter-sound knowledge, phonemic awareness, and decoding. Lastly, we worked on our comprehension skills by reading passages and answering questions related to the passage.

In math, we also split into small groups. Some of us worked on number recognition, and others worked on multiplication. We had fun playing some math games and practicing various skills on the math program Splash Learn. We also listened to some of our favourite math songs to support our learning and further develop our skills.

We enjoyed the mild weather and went on a few community walks around the community of Southwood. This provides us the opportunity to converse with peers, learn pedestrian safety, and get rid of any extra energy we may have. We will try to go for community walks each afternoon, as long as the weather continues to cooperate.

We are looking forward to the upcoming short week. We will celebrate Valentine's Day by spreading extra kindness in our classroom and also have some learning fun that related to our 100th Day of School.

Reminder:
Please ensure you bring your Communication Folder to school each day. We will write a daily message to share with our family. Additionally, there is space for home-school communication, if needed. Also, this is where you will find any forms that have been sent home.

Please review, sign & return Telus Be Brave Field Trip Forms that were sent home last week. We do not require any additional volunteers for this field trip. Thank-you. We will keep you in mind for any future field trips that we may take.

If you have not returned your child's IPP signature page, please do so as soon as possible. Thank-you :)
